Steve Suderman - Director / Producer
Steve grew up on a farm in rural Manitoba, Canada. He started his career teaching high school mathematics and science before pursuing filmmaking in 2002. Steve has always maintained an interest in farming and farm related issues, and once spent 6 months wwoofing in New Zealand. He and his partner Jessica grow a garden every year in an attempt to make ever-fewer trips to the grocery store.
Steve recently produced and directed the full-length documentary Over Land which tells the intimate story of his own family caught in the throes of the current farm crisis. Over Land has screened in Canada as well as in the U.S., Italy, and Israel at festivals and on television.
Philosopher and activist Nettie Wiebe says that “Over Land captures a complex, troubling story with sensitivity, grace and truth … profound, sobering but not despairing.”
Christina Stojanova of the University of Regina calls Over Land “a powerful public statement against the dehumanization of twenty-first century capitalism.”
Over Land was an Official Finalist at the 2009 Canadian International Film Festival in Vancouver, and was nominated for Best of Saskatchewan at the Yorkton film festival. It recently screened at the Planet In Focus International Film Festival in Toronto.
